picking the raffle ticket

We randomly chose the winner! And the winner is Meg.

Thank you everyone for buying raffle tickets. At our coffee morning on Tuesday we had Kimberly pick the winning ticket. Thanks to all who bought tickets! Meg won the beautiful Cotton Reel art style quilt by Faye Vawdrey of the Queen Bees quilt group in Melbourne. It was exquisitely hand quilted by the girls of “Our Home.” Remember if you need a quilt made, “Our home” girls can

  • make a quilt to your specifications from scratch
  • finish a project for you at any stage
  • repair and restore antique quilts
  • they are experts at hand quilting your quilt top to make it an heirloom piece

Khun Tiew supervises and teaches quilting to young women, some having small children. Our Home takes in young women from different backgrounds that need a helping hand and a fresh start. By taking these young women in, Tiew and her husband have provided a home and an artisitic skill and income for these young women… quilting!

Our Home in Rayong, Thailand is a real help for these young women to get a fresh start in life. Thanks for your donations.

If you would like to help “Our Home”, please donate. Thank you very much!

Batiks in Thailand

Posted by Jill C. on November 8, 2010

One place to find batiks in Thailand is along Sampeng Lane at the sarong shops. Two famous shops are Emchit and Vibul Kit. The shop numbers go in order. Even numbers on one side, odd numbers on the other side of the lane. Vibul Kit is #96 and Emchit is nearby. A sarong is 2 meters (a little more than 2 yards) and costs approximately 100 baht. It is great for quilting and if you are looking for Thai fabrics, get some of the other sarongs too. Some have small prints, and some have plain colors with border prints. See below for batiks from Emchit. Vibul Kit carries the same line. As for other places to buy batiks, I will let you know when I find them!

#96 Vibul Kit - sarong fabric which can be used for quilting.

Shopping for fabric and supplies in Bangkok

Posted by Jill C. on March 27, 2010

Sampeng Lane in Chinatown is the best place to buy 100% cotton fabric at good prices. If you buy 10 meters or more, you get the wholesale price. It can be 1 meter of 10 different fabrics. Minimum cut, 1 meter. No bargaining, because it’s not a tourist place, it’s a wholesale place. Prices range from 3 meters for 100 baht ($1 per yard) up to 250 baht per meter (about $8 per yard). You’ll find Fabric Center in addition to many other shops, see Sampeng Lane Map. Opening hours are from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

The following stores in Bangkok sell 100% cotton fabric. These are all branches of one company, and if you buy more than 2500 baht you get a 10% discount.

Tang hua seng is a department store with two branches: one across the river in Thonburi and one on Khao San Road. They sell fabric, fat quarters, batting (white or black), thread, rotary cutters and blades, and craft supplies. I noticed ‘sa’ paper, burlap, terrycloth, and velcro in pink, red, green, black and white up to 4″ wide. Tang Hua Seng is on Nancy Chandler’s Map of Bangkok, 25th Edition

Rotary cutters, blades and cutting mats are available at JCC stationery store on Narathiwat Road in the Silom area (business district).
