How to get to Sampeng Lane Chinatown on the MRT
The way to get to Sampeng Lane by public transport is to take the MRT Metropolitan Rapid Transit
(subway) to the Hua Lampong Station. Walk out exit 4. Straight ahead you will see bus 40 waiting there usually. It takes you to Sampeng for only 8 baht. Have fun seeing the sights and sounds of Chinatown!
- Bus 40 goes from Hua Lampong and stops near Sampeng Lane, along Yaowarat Rd.
- You can get off around here, at Tesco Lotus on Yaowarat Road
- Across the street from Tesco Lotus is a brick road called Mangkon Road. You’ll see this sign although it’s hidden by vendors’ umbrellas. The sign indicates Wat Mangkon Kamalawat 250 m and Wat Traimit 750 m. Walk down Mangkon Road away from Yaowarat Road, towards Sampeng.
- You can recognize Mangkon Road here, a nice wide brick lined lane. Here you find wholesale hair clips, toys, stationery.
- Continue straight through this intersection with Bangkok Bank, one of Bangkok’s oldest commercial buildings. The exterior is an example of classic early Rattanakosin-style with European influences. Next intersection is Sampeng walking lane. Turn right for the fabric section, or left to sightsee temples and sights.
- #180 Sampeng Lane, Kanazawa bead shop for wholesale pearls, stones and mother of pearl. Great prices on ready made necklaces, bracelets and beads to string, great for gifts. Beads are made of howlite, quartz and real pearls. Prices under 100 baht per necklace. Hours 8:00 – 5:00 daily.
- #258 Sampeng Lane, Belleboo has lots of elephant prints in many colors, cute little elephants on a plain background.
- Blue shirts are on sale for upcoming Mother’s Day August 12
- New Mega Plaza Wangburapa, in place of the old Merry King dept store. There is a bus stop here, but bus 40 stops across the street and from here you can go back to Hua Lampong and the MRT.
